The successful candidate will serve as a member of the GBHEM Executive Staff, providing leadership in the execution of the board’s mission through the strategic plan and representing GBHEM through work related to General Conference Initiatives delegated to GBHEM. As a member of the executive staff, working in consultation with the general secretary, the incumbent will respond to needs on behalf of the entire board as a strategic partner and team member.
As the senior executive of the Division of Ordained Ministry (DOM), s/he will be responsible for the successful execution of the work assigned to the DOM and the oversight and supervision of the staff of the DOM. This includes staff and budget management, planning and coordination, assignment of responsibilities, and evaluation of program and staff within the DOM.
The Associate General Secretary (DOM) represents the GBHEM in a variety of relationships with entities within and beyond The United Methodist Church. These include (but are not limited to) the Association of United Methodist Theological Schools (AUMTS), the Ministry Study Commission, the University Senate, the Commission on Theological Education and the United Methodist Theological Schools in Europe.
The Associate General Secretary provides leadership in the area of ordained, licensed, endorsed and certified ministry through work with annual conferences both within and beyond the United States. This includes coordinating the development and provision of resources for boards of ordained ministry and the Course of Study. This work also includes the distribution and management of the Ministerial Education Fund (MEF).
Requirements: Master of Divinity; ordained elder in full connection; minimum of four years experience as a member of a conference board of ordained ministry; strong knowledge of the structure and polity of the United Methodist Church; previous management experience in either large church or non-profit agency; strong leadership skills and ability to work well in a team environment; strong analytical skills and ability to think strategically (visionary); strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; excellent written and oral communication skills; sensitivity to a diverse population: culturally, racially, and theologically; ability to communicate and work with colleagues in a team approach; consultative and cooperative leadership and superior management skills. Candidates must be willing and able to travel extensively. Relocation to Nashville, TN, required.
