 d pre-conference briefing at First UMC, Honolulu. The theme 
 is “How Firm a Foundation,” and will focus on some of the fo
 undational Wesleyan practices. One of those practices will b
 e class meetings and prayer, led by Christ UMC. Another one 
 of the practices will be ministering to those in need. We wi
 ll be hearing from the First LAP (Life After Prison) partici
 pants. As an added bonus, the First LAP participants will be
  catering the meal. Windward Snow, who provided shave ice fo
 r participants, will be back again.We will be taking a speci
 al offering that will benefit First LAP. Please come prepare
 d to be generous—another foundational Wesleyan practice!At t
 he District Conference, we will hear a proposed new structur
 e that aligns closely with the annual conference structure. 
 We will be approving new leaders for the district as well as
  candidates for ministry. We will be honoring our retirees, 
 giving thanks to our departing clergy and district leaders, 
 and we will be hearing from Debbie Wise of Guam UMC, who wil
 l be honored at annual conference as the laywoman of the yea

DESCRIPTION:Clergy Convocation will take place September 24th through 26
 th, 2013 in Palm Springs, CA.  Dr. Jeffrey Kuan has consente
 d to be the keynote speaker. Kah-Jin Jeffrey Kuan became Dea
 n of the Theological School and Professor of Hebrew Bible in
  2011 at Drew University.  A scholar of ancient Israelite an
 d Near Eastern history, Dr. Kuan’s current research addresse
 s Asian and Asian American hermeneutics, as well as approach
 es to biblical instruction for the churches. He is currently
  completing a commentary on the biblical book of Joshua.Kuan
  began his career serving as an associate pastor from 1980 t
 o 1983 in Malaysia. In 2002, he became an ordained elder and
  full member of the California-Nevada Annual Conference of T
 he United Methodist Church. Since 2008, he has served as the
  Vice President of the Board of Directors of the UMC’s Gener
 al Board of Higher Education and Ministry. In 2004, the Reco
 nciling Ministries of the California-Nevada Annual Conferenc
 e named him the winner of the Turtle Award for “sticking his
  neck out” for the LGBTQ community. Dean Kuan previously ser
 ved on the faculties of the Pacific School of Religion and t
 he Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, and t
 he South East Asia Graduate School’s Regional Faculty. He al
 so served as Old Testament Editor for the multi-volume New I
 nterpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible from 2006 to 2009. He c
 urrently serves on the Council of the Society of Biblical Li
